@SunDeviltfxc looks back on historic 2008 sweep

Everyone was aware of the situation. Arizona State and Florida State were tied at 38 with 16 of the 17 events scored.

Everything was at stake when Jimmie Gordon stepped into the blocks for the final race of the evening, the final race of the championships and the final race of his collegiate indoor career.

The Seminoles' quartet had already made their statement with a 3:07.47 that had the ACC team champions in second place and in prime position to win their first ever NCAA indoor title after coming up five points short a year ago.

Sun Devil head coach Greg Kraft looked on as his senior All-American shot out of the blocks and around the banked first turn on the track at the Tyson Indoor Facility.

"In the moment, you feel like you always have a chance," Kraft said. "We've had great relays where a guy had dropped the stick or run on the line. In that race, I was watching the kids compete, but I was also looking out for yellow flags."

The nerves didn't show, though. After all, just a few minutes earlier, his Sun Devil women's program had clinched its second consecutive NCAA team title.

the year of maggie ewen

This past season, Sun Devil senior Maggie Ewen etched her name in Arizona State and NCAA history when she broke the collegiate record and ran away with the hammer throw title at the NCAA Championships.

She did the unprecedented when she swept the discus, shot put and hammer throw at the Pac-12 Championships, and Ewen alone outscored 40 programs at the NCAA Championships in June when she put up 21 points in her three events.

2017 was the Year of Maggie Ewen.

But that dream season almost didn't happen.

josh thompson’s unlikely path to history

When Cowboy senior Josh Thompson came to Stillwater last year, no one knew what to expect.

He wasn't highly-touted. The red carpet wasn't rolled out.

The 22-year-old junior college transfer had joined a program with a rich history of middle-distance success. He joined a group littered with All-Americans, conference champions and a national champion.

Yet, within one year, he became a leader on that team.

from cali to cowboy: j.r. davis’ unconventional path to stardom

In his first year as an Oklahoma State Cowboy, J.R. Davis has become a star.

The journey to how Davis got here is a unique story, one filled with perseverance, hard work and a valuable mentorship with a baseball great.

A native of California, Davis took an unconventional route to Stillwater. But since joining coach Josh Holliday's ball club last fall, he has cemented himself into the Cowboy lineup with his solid defense at second base and impressive numbers at the dish.

"I never expected to be in Stillwater, Oklahoma," Davis said, "This was farfetched, definitely, but I love being here. It's weird being from California and coming to Stillwater, but I love everything about this place."

little guy, big production

It's always easy to cheer for the little guy, whether it's an actual little guy or just an overmatched David of a team going up against a Goliath organization.

Corey Hassel is Oklahoma State baseball's `little guy.' But this little guy may be the Pokes' biggest weapon.

At 5-foot-10 and 175 pounds, Hassel is the smallest pitcher on a staff that averages 6-foot-2, and when he's in the outfield, he's among the smallest Cowboys on the diamond.

But Hassel is proving that size matters not -- he just may be the Cowboys' best hitter in 2015 after spending two seasons as a relative unknown.
